• Maintain generation and load balance within Balancing Authority and coordinate interchange schedules to ensure compliance with NERC Reliability Standards.
• As System Operator, have the responsibility and authority to implement real-time actions to ensure the stable and reliable operation of the Bulk Electric System.
• Have the authority to take or direct timely and appropriate real-time actions, up to and including shedding firm load, without obtaining approval from higher level personnel.
• During emergency conditions, System Operator shall take necessary actions to prevent or alleviate System Operating Limit and/or Interconnection or Reliability Operating Limit violations up to and including shedding firm load.
• Communicate with Balancing Authorities, Reliability Coordinators, Transmission Operators and ISO on continual basis, taking necessary actions and providing ancillary services to ensure system reliability.
• System Operator must comply with applicable NERC Reliability Standards. Trading:
• Aggressively trade short-term hourly power within the guidelines of the risk and credit policies.
• Analyze and react to current market and competitive conditions.
• Manage trading decisions with a continuous focus on balancing risk versus return to produce maximum profitability.
• Interact with market participants to develop, negotiate, and execute valuable business opportunities.
• Develop relationships with counterparties and maintain conduct in accordance with fair and ethical business practices.
• Analyze and evaluate energy transactions to ensure that all relevant aspects including energy price, transmission, counter party, and contractual terms are favorable to and consistent with company guidelines for risk management. General:
• Operate in compliance with NRG’s North American Trading Policy, Power Marketing’s Statement of Professional Ethics and NRG’s Code of Conduct.
• Partner with other business units and/or departments to identify and facilitate business process improvements.
• Assist with developing and implementing training programs for the real-time trading desk.
• System Operator must complete necessary NERC Balancing and Interchange certification and continuing education requirements.

Requirements Qualifications:

• Bachelor’s degree in economics, business, finance, or other relevant degree with two years of experience.
• One year or more of real-time trading experience
• Knowledge of the industry’s operating procedures and requirements regarding interconnected regions (NERC), power pools and ISO’s.
• NERC certification required.
• Knowledge of trading control procedures and policies. • Knowledge of the characteristics of products bought or sold on electricity markets.
• Knowledge of the transmission network.
• Competence with mathematics and technical concepts. • Strong analytical and problem solving skills.
• Proven ability to take appropriate action within time constraints. • Proficient with Microsoft Excel.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
• Motivated self-starter with ability to work independently and as part of a team
• Traders must be able to work a 12-hour shift schedule as part of a 24 hour, 7 days a week operation.

Must have a PHD and currently be on in the front office supporting the energy traders doing mathematical modeling.

The Quantitative Analyst will work on various projects including, but not limited to developing, enhancing, and operating a proprietary capital sufficiency model for a Credit Derivatives Product Company, optimizing its capital structure, modeling structured credit transactions, as well as analyzing the investment portfolio. Successful candidates should have a PHD degree in a quantitative and/or finance discipline; analytic experience in an investment or banking firm is a significant advantage but not required. The teams need is more of the quantitative analysis and financial mathematics type (as opposed to programming), as well as some familiarity with derivates product company's capital structure and its optimization, and various issues surrounding corporate finance (return on equity, revenue projection, etc) and investment products. along that line also comes with the need to be able to intuitively anticipate/explain the complex model's results, and communicate in non-technical language.

Purpose of Position
This position provides a leadership role to research and understand retail natural gas and power obligations and develops and manages, physical and financial trading strategies to serve contract load while maximizing earnings for unregulated retail services and operating within company risk policy and procedures parameters. This position executes natural gas physical and financial trading strategies. This position also serves as a resource back up for power physical and financial trading requirements in emergency situations including illness, vacation, peak demand, etc.

Primary Job Duties and Responsibilities (Essential Job Functions)
Develop, recommend and manage current physical and financial trading activities to support the unregulated retail services trading books and maintain compliance with company risk policies and procedures.

Provide the gas products group with real time pricing.  Serves as resource back up to provide the electric product group indicative hourly costing models on a daily basis for customer proposals. The individual must maintain multiple wholesale trading sources such as, counterparties, intercontinental-exchange, Platts, etc. to ensure accurate and competitive electric costing models for customer price proposals.

Interact with the unregulated retail services gas and electric operation groups to understand short and long term load, capacity and transmission obligations, relative to physical and financial trades in place to serve contracted obligations. Seek out physical and financial trading strategies based on the relationships between pro forma costing and market trends.

Develop, research, analyze, model and manage existing and new natural gas and power trading strategies, including financial and physical positions relative to volumetric obligations. Assist accounting in any risk management calculations or forecasting requirements relative to the portfolio of positions.

Interact with multiple sources (counterparties, news resources, technical and fundamental trend resources) to track natural gas and electric wholesale price trends, including historical heat rate relationships between natural gas and power. Communicate market trends and recommended strategies based on market trends.

Provide technical leadership to staff.

Provide technical input to assist in development of project planning.

Perform additional responsibilities as requested or assigned.

Requirements
Bachelor’s degree in business-related field or comparable trading industry experience or equivalent work experience. (Typically six years of related, progressive work experience would be needed for candidates applying for this position who do not possess a bachelor’s degree.)

Advanced degree preferred.

Seven years experience in the energy industry, specific to energy trading or unregulated retail energy marketing, with at least two years of energy trading experience.

Effective oral and written communication skills.

Effective analytical, problem-solving and decision-making skills.

Demonstrate ability to understand and utilize computer systems and applications as tools for analysis.

Effective interpersonal skills and the ability to work independently and as part of a team.

Strong project management skills; the ability to prioritize and handle multiple tasks and projects.
