Position Overview

The primary responsibility of the Investment Associate is to work with research analysts, portfolio managers, and traders on a daily basis to assist in Putnam's investment processes. All Investment Associates will work directly with a quantitative analyst, who will serve as their mentor during their time at Putnam.

Position Responsibilities:
Use Putnam and third party investment tools to produce various analyses

Gather, verify, adjust, and summarize research information

Assist analysts in the research process including the execution of various short-term analysis projects

Build and update tools and models using a wide variety of spreadsheet, statistical analysis, and database software applications; tools and models range from individual security analysis to top-down econometric modeling

Create spreadsheets and other documents that effectively communicate key investment positions and risks to team

Education and Work Experience:
BA or BS degree required: major in finance, economics, physical
sciences, engineering, mathematics or similar discipline is preferred.

Prior work experience in the financial industry with firm understanding of basic fixed income or equity concepts where applicable is a plus.

Experience in quantitative research and analysis.

Superior undergraduate record.

Excellent computer skills, including working knowledge of Matlab, C++, S+, or similar.

Team player; willingness to work with people at all levels to promote the common interest, willingness to work tirelessly toward the achievement of both departmental and personal goals.

The Associate Portfolio Manager is responsible for investment management of multi-manager portfolios and separate accounts. The primary objective of the APM is to generate superior investment performance with portfolios meeting or exceeding stated objectives.

The Associate Portfolio Manager role will work alongside the lead Portfolio Manager managing Russell's Global Equity multi-manager funds. Portfolio Management

* Provisional selection and combining of managers and for managing structural biases and tilts in collaboration with the lead PM, asset class team, and subject to ISC approval
* Supervises and helps the development of analytical tools in the portfolio management process to understand risk and exposures; monitor risk and return profile for each fund
* Ensures full documentation of portfolio decisions and manager meetings and supervises fund reporting
* Demonstrates leadership within asset class team and supervises and trains less experienced analysts
* Liaison with Capital Markets and Manager Research to Capture best ideas for alpha generation

Portfolio Design and Development

* Works with sales and client service units to specify and assess viability of new products including product definition and development.
* Constructs products in collaboration with asset class team.
* Sponsors new (capital markets) research and contributes to development of manager research process.
* Ensures portfolio design process incorporates best research input and ideas.

Sales, Client Service and Reporting

* Represents asset class and funds to external clients and internally.
* Participation in presentations to prospects, existing clients and consultants.
* Write articles for web site, participation in conferences, respond queries, etc.
* Keep internal business units and leaders up-to-date with market developments and trends.

Requirements

* Preference for Master degree in Finance, Mathematics, Econometrics, Investments or business
* Chartered Financial Analyst designation required
* Five to ten years of relevant investment related experience in a portfolio management or manager research role
* Thorough knowledge of global capital markets, investment strategies and managers. Firm grasp of and experience with operational framework and regulatory obligations. Actual portfolio management in an asset class is seen as a valuable background
* Portfolio management skills (benchmarking processes, contracting and negotiation skills, dealing with resistance, information gathering, diagnosing problems, and feedback skills)
* Financial analysis, strategic and theoretical skills; in-depth performance measurement analytics and methodology
* Demonstrated ability to take successful, reasoned and timely investment decisions. Demonstrated ability to implement these decisions.
* Proven ability to represent the firm externally to clients, prospects, media, managers, suppliers etc
* Proven and reliable written and oral communication skills (including presentations).
